Esper

Roll & Hill

2016

The Esper lamps take their inspiration from the chochin, the archetypal paper lantern typically found outside restaurants and izakayas in Japan. The three different forms are distortions of the iconic lantern, referentially constructed in glass and metal in an attempt to maintain a sense of the ephemeral nature of the original.

The top and bottom caps maintain the lantern iconography and serve a functional purpose, housing custom LED panels and distributing their light evenly through the globe, while the yoke on the top acts as a handle, assisting with ceiling installation and serving a practical purpose when used as a table lamp.
